Former engineer finds second career in cancer data management
Roland Rodriguez loved being a chemical engineer. Frankly, after three decades in
the petrochemical industry with a good paycheck, he wasn’t considering a change.Then came 2020. With projects suspended at his Houston engineering firm, Rodriguez got laid off.
Rodriguez’s year-long job search led him to the perfect opportunity to reskill: San Jac’s cancer data management program.

San Jacinto College expands nationally recognized cancer data management program nationwide
As cancer cases reach record highs, San Jac expanded its cancer data management program
to students nationwide in June 2025. Oncology data specialists document the full history,
diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of U.S. cancer patients — advancing research and
treatment and improving cancer prevention and screening. San Jac’s program is the
first accredited by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
Abacus Employees complete ESL Training with San Jac
San Jacinto College celebrates 23 graduates in workplace ESL partnership with Abacus
San Jac is providing customized English as a second language training for Abacus Plumbing
HVAC installers. In spring 2025, the 10-week intensive course helped 23 HVAC technicians
learn speaking, customer relations, and soft skills while earning a certificate.
"We developed a curriculum that fit their needs based on the work they do day-to-day,"
said Roberto Mendez, adult education grants director.
English professor collaborates with Dear Jack Foundation to promote kindness
Beginning in fall 2024, English professor Dr. Bryan Corbin and his students used their
words to share hope and understanding with cancer patients — a simple act of kindness
to make a profound impact. Collaborating with the Dear Jack Foundation, students crafted
letters for patients from late teens to 30s, some dealing with terminal illness.
An incumbent training open house in spring 2025 showcased the high-quality training and facilities at San Jac’s LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology. Industry experts shared the value of giving their employees hands-on training in a controlled environment.
